Leonard was preceded in death by his wife (Mary), one son (Gregory “Jiggs”), one brother (Elmer), two sons-in-law (Jay Barnick & Richard Schumacher), and his second wife (Della). He is survived by three daughters, Joann Karlson of Washburn, Paulette Schumacher of Halliday, ND, & Elaine Barnick of Washburn one son, Jess (Sharon) Karlson of Billings, MT 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren four brothers, Glenn Karlson of Garrison, Norman (Elva) Karlson of White Shield, ND, Harley (Grace) Karlson of Monarch, MT, & Vernon Karlson of Minnesota one sister, Melba (Roland) Morgan of Manteca, CA and many nieces & nephews. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors. Wallin American Legion Post 12 of Washburn and the V.F.W. Leonard was an active member of the Victor B. He was a member of the IBEW union and received their 50 year service pin. Leonard was employed as an Electrical Lineman for over thirty years. They made their home in Garrison, ND and later moved to Washburn in the early 1950’s. He married Mary Peterson on Main Washburn. Following his discharge, he returned to North Dakota and worked as a shovel operator for Truax Traer Coal Company. Leonard was decorated as a member of the 42nd Division Rainbow Rangers Platoon. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on December 6, 1945. He served as a Squad Leader (745) which liberated the Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany. He was raised in the Elbowoods area, southwest of Garrison, where he attended rural school. Leonard was born Apin Emmet, ND to Peter & Mabel (Smith) Karlson. Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Sunday at Goetz Funeral Home in Washburn. Interment will be held at a later date at Riverview Cemetery in Washburn.
